How do I get to Porto?
Porto airport offers direct flights to New York City and several other U.S. locations, as well as many European cities. The flight from New York (Newark EWR) to Porto (OPO) is approximately 6.5 hours.
If you select a flight with a connection, we recommend flying through a U.S. connection city (such as Newark) or through Madrid, as immigration delays at Lisbon can be significant.
What weather should I expect?
In early September, you can expect an average high of 78°F and an average low of 61°F. The chances of rain are low, but rain is possible.

Do I need a visa or passport to enter Portugal?
U.S. citizens can enter Portugal without a visa and stay for up to 90 days. You DO need a U.S. passport, valid for at least 6 months after entry.
What’s the best way to reach my hotel from the airport?
Uber is in Portugal and is the easiest way to get from the airport to Porto hotels. Your hotel may offer a pickup service; contact the hotel for more information.
Will my electronic devices work in Portugal?
The power outlets are type C/F plugs (European), so your devices will need adapters. The voltage is 230 volts; U.S. hair tools without a clear 110-240 V marking will fry if you plug them in here, so ask your hotel for a hairdryer. Many devices, such as laptop converters, will work on higher voltage; check to make sure that 230 V is within their range.
Will my mobile phone work in Portugal?
Contact your home mobile phone carrier and make sure that international roaming will work. Or, if your phone is "carrier unlocked," you can get a temporary SIM from a local Vodafone or MEO. These cards are cheap, with generous data limits, and available in the airport. However, they will only work if your phone is not carrier locked.
How do I pay for things in Portugal?
Credit cards such as VISA and Mastercard are widely accepted, and contactless payment such as Apple Pay or Samsung Pay works at most locations. You can also withdraw Euros from ATMs or exchange dollars for Euros at the airport.
Personal checks and U.S. dollar bills are not accepted.
Do people speak English?
Many people in Porto do speak English. You'll be able to find someone to help you at any restaurant, hotel, or other place of service.
Is tipping custom?
No. It is not customary to tip in Portugal.
Can I drink the tap water?
Yes. Tap water in Portugal is safe nationwide.
Is Portugal safe?
Portugal has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world.

Is travel insurance required?
No, travel insurance is not required. If you would like medical or lost bag insurance, see if your flight booking or credit card provider offers coverage. If not, temporary travel insurance is extremely affordable.
